Students’ capacity, constructing a thesis statement

Abstract

Writing is one of the language abilities that many individuals, especially students, find challenging. Developing a thesis statement is one of the first steps in writing because it serves as the basis for any type of writing statement. This study was a qualitative study that used data from second-year English students' Writing Course III. The four indicators employed by researchers to assess the ability to develop a thesis statement showed a similar average, namely 1.53; 1.47; 1.5; and 1.34 for declarative statements, effectiveness, controls, spelling, grammar, and punctuation, respectively. According to the data, most students were able to formulate declarative claims in their thesis statements (1.53); however, this capacity is still insufficient. Meanwhile, of the four indicators utilized, their ability to regulate the assertion and develop it into a proper paragraph had the lowest average score (1.34). In conclusion, even though the student's thesis statement had flaws, it was adequate.
