ANALYZING AND IMPROVING AN ESP SYLLABUS FOR NAUTICAL STUDENTS

Working as a seafarer inevitably encounters situations when communicating in English is highly necessary. English plays a vital role in conveying something intelligibly and assisting in accomplishing tasks while having duties. The existence and role of English are required among seafarer candidates to help their work in a professional setting and daily basis. The students of the Nautical Study Program in Surabaya Maritime Polytechnic who are expected to work on board are therefore in need of English which specifically improves their English skills for professional and daily basis use. This study aims to develop an English syllabus by using Research and Development Method. To collect the data, the researcher conducts need analysis by interviewing the English lecturers and giving questionnaires to the Nautical students at Surabaya Maritime Polytechnic. The result from the need analysis showed that speaking and listening are mainly needed since students need to communicate on board. Therefore, a syllabus that covers communication skills material is required to be developed. A skill-based syllabus is developed based on the needs analysis. Hence, the result of this study can be used as a reference in teaching English to nautical students
