ENGLISH MEDIUM INSTRUCTION : INTEGRATING TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING STUDENTS' ENGAGEMENT AT INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM OF STATE POLYTECHNIC OF MALANG

Abstract

English Medium Instruction has been a growing phenomenon worldwide. In Indonesia, it has been a common practice in higher education levels. State Polytechnic of Malang (Polinema) has been running an international program for years and becoming a leading institution for EMI in Indonesia. In this sharing session, we EMI teachers would like to share our experiences in teaching EMI classes, using some strategies of Chunking, IRF, Wait Time
and HOT (Higher Order Thinking). These strategies can improve students‘ engagement and also their communication skills. The goal of EMI teaching is simply not only to give students‘ understanding of the content subject but also their English communication.
