Abstract

Translation is essential for helping people who speak different languages to understand the message in literature, for example, a novel. Translating a novel is often not easy because the translator not only translates the meaning from source into target language, but also translates the messages and ideas of the original author. In this research, the researcher conducted an annotated translation from English into Indonesian of a classic business genre novel entitled The Financier (1912) by Theodore Dreiser. This research purposes are (1) to identify the problems faced by the researcher during the translation of The Financier novel; (2) to analyze the problems and generate the solutions to solve the problems encountered and produce appropriate translations. In conducting this research, the researcher identified the problems, analyzed, and generated solutions to solve them. Then, the report was written using the introspective and retrospective methods. The researcher translated 4 chapters of the novel from chapters 3 to 6. The researcher found 35 problematic items during the translation which consist of 16 words, 17 phrases, 1 clause, and 1 sentence. Then, these items were classified into 3 categories, namely understanding (U), transfer (T), and understanding and transfer (UT). The researcher analyzed the problems and solved them by referring to experts’ translation theories. The experts are Chesterman (1997) with syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic strategies, Baker (2018) with strategies at word and above word level, Duff (1989) with idiomatic expressions strategies, and Aixela (1996) with culture-specific items strategies. The researcher also referred to Hariyanto (2017) classification of Chesterman (1997) translation strategies. Moreover, Nida and Taber (1982) translation process and Newmark (1988) translation methods are also referred to by the researcher. The researcher expects that this annotated translation research can be useful for State Polytechnic of Malang students, future researchers, and translators who will be conducting research in the same field.
