YOUNG ADULTS’ MEDIA PREFERENCES IN SUPPORTING THEIR ENGLISH LEARNING

Teaching English for young adult students from non-English department class are always challenging. Regarding to their age that is in between young and adult learners, the teacher should understand the appropriate way of teaching and the choice of learning media as well. The teacher should also provide a low anxiety environment since this kind of students tend to be anxious of making mistakes and failed in the exam. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the media preferences in learning English by young adults. By understanding these preferences, we would know the trends of learning media preferences among them and utilize it in the class. Descriptive qualitative was employed as the research design and the informant of this study were 68 students whose age around 19-22 years old. They were considered as the most authoritative since they could give information the researcher needed. Data was collected by using open-ended questions. The results showed that the most preferable media were movies and songs. Then, they loved using social media, games, English book and dictionary. The less preferable media were cartoon or animation, duo lingo, notebook, website and google. Almost all of the informants used more than one media to support their English learning. In conclusion, the most preferable media utilized by young adult learners were movies and songs and they used more than one media.
