Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced academic writing practices, especially in non-native English contexts. For students in technical fields such as Chemical Engineering, writing abstracts in English often becomes a big challenge. In this regard, AI tools are increasingly employed to overcome these difficulties. This study investigates the use of AI in writing English abstracts for final projects among Chemical Engineering students at Polinema. It focuses on three aspects: the types of AI programs used, the purposes of their use, and students’ perceptions of AI utilization. The findings reveal that ChatGPT is the most widely used AI tool among the students. The primary purpose of using AI is to improve grammar, followed by translation assistance. Furthermore, most students expressed positive perceptions of AI, considering it a helpful tool in writing English abstracts for their final reports and theses. These results suggest that AI has become an important support system in academic writing, particularly in enhancing language accuracy and efficiency.
