AN ANALYSIS OF COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES USED IN ‘WHAT IS UP, INDONESIA?’ PODCAST FEATURING ANIES BASWEDAN

Abstract

In the current era of globalization, innovation has emerged in the digital world, especially in audiovisual media, one of which is podcasts. Podcasts usually offer unique themes and topics that can be accessed by everyone on the internet. One popular podcast is the WIUI channel on YouTube, which shows perspectives from experts who are competent in their fields. WIUI channel is designed as a learning channel for Indonesians who grew up abroad.

This research uses a qualitative research method with data collection conducted using observation and documentation. This research aims to analyze and demonstrate communication strategies and also compile communication tips that can be implemented from the podcast. Kasper & Kellerman's (2014) communication strategy is used as the basic theory of this research. Researcher analyzed and calculated the communication strategies found by watching the full video and collecting the documents, then each strategy was described.

The results of the research showed that there are thirteen communication strategies were used, namely repetition (79.82%), restructuring (8.97%), appeal for assistance (2.69%), message abandonment (2.69%), foreignizing (0.90%), semantic contiguity (0.90%), gesture (0.90%), literal translation (0.90%), approximation (0.45%), borrowing (0.45%), explication (0.45%), formal reduction (0.45%), and ostension (0.45%). The other seven strategies, word coinage, circumlocution, overexplicitness, exemplification, message replacement, topic avoidance, and mime, were not found. Repetition strategy was the most frequently used strategy. The researcher advised the hosts and guest speaker not to use repetition strategy continuously, so that the podcast does not seem monotonous.
