Abstract

This research discusses the translation of The 80/20 CEO: Take Command of Your Business in 100 Days, written by Bill Cannady. The demand for practical resources for new entrepreneurs has led for accessible practical insight. A business playbook functions as an insightful guide, and translation plays a central role in disseminating the content of the books to Indonesian who are interested in business, yet have very limited knowledge of English. This study is conducted to fill the gap by utilizing an English playbook as the research object to analyze and discuss the solutions to problems faced during the translation process. This research aims to: (1) identify the problems encountered during the translation process; (2) find the strategies to overcome the problems encountered. In conducting this research, the researcher added an annotation during the identification and applied the solutions to the problems. The report writing utilizes introspective and retrospective methods. The findings show that of the 37 problems, 21 were in Transfer (T), 15 were in Understanding & Transfer (U&T), and 1 was in Understanding (U). The problems were solved utilizing translation strategies of Chesterman (2016), including syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic strategies. The most frequently used strategies were a semantic strategy, trope change, and a pragmatic strategy, explicitness change.
The results of this research offer an understanding of the translation of a persuasive business playbook, presenting practical solutions, and adaptive strategies, and a communicative approach. This study suggests that future researchers must master translation theories and apply creative adaptation and rhetorical analysis during the process of translation. The translation and annotation result of this study could be used as learning material in the translation subject for English Department students.
